Baseball Falls Late to WKU, 5-3
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.— After going up 3-0 in game one, the University at Albany baseball team (4-7, 0-0), eventually gave up the lead to lose to Western Kentucky (9-4, 0-0) with a final score of 5-3.
With Karson Canaday on first, Will Miller sent him to third with a double down the left field line, and then Kyle Sacks would get his third hit of the game with a single to center field, to bring in Canaday and giving UAlbany a 1-0 lead.
After striking out the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth, Stephen Woods let up a single through the middle of the field to Ty Downing. Woods seemed to be a little shaken up after walking the next two batters and throwing multiple wild pitches, which allowed WKU to bring in two runs, giving UAlbany just a 3-2 lead.
Danny Hudzina began the bottom of the seventh inning with a single through the right side off of freshman Hunter Torres, and Kaleb Duckworth followed with a double to right field. WKU tied the game at 3-3 when Paul Murray sent the ball through the left side to bring in Hudzina.
Freshman Dom Savino entered for UAlbany to give up a double to right center from Downing who scored Duckworth and Murray, to give WKU the 5-3 lead.
Sacks led the Danes in hitting, going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Hinchy added the other two RBI’s on one hit during the game.
Downing, who hit in the game winner for WKU, went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI’s and one run scored.
Torres (0-1) received the loss for UAlbany, pitching just 0.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits.
Woods, pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits and added six strikeouts.
Sam Higgs (2-1) was awarded with the win for WKU after coming in relief for 3.2 innings, allowing just four hits and compiled four strikeouts.
Austin King who started the game for the Hilltoppers, went 5.1 innings, and allowed three earned runs on five hits and had four strikeouts.
Due to impending weather, the Danes and Hilltoppers will play a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Nick Denes Field. UAlbany junior RHP Ryan Stinar and WKU LHP Ryan Thurston will get the start in game one, while LHP Marcus Failing and RHP Josh Bartley take the mound in game two.
