Baseball Splits Doubleheader With NYIT, 5-2, 0-3

Box Score Game 1 I Game 2

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – On a brisk Saturday afternoon the University at Albany baseball team (3-5, 0-0) won the first game of the double header, 5-2, before falling to NYIT (3-3) in the second matchup, 3-0.

“We came out of the gates today, and had a great first win, and in the second game it was a tough day to hit,” said UAlbany Baseball head coach Jon Mueller.

In game one, NYIT went up early in the top of the first, 2-0. Stephen Woods walked Thomas Joannou and gave up a single to Anthony Martelli to start the inning. Joe Daru sent the ball to center field for a double, bringing in Joannou from second. Martelli scored from third base off a passed ball from Woods.

After a few scoreless innings, the Danes tied the ball game in the top of the fourth inning. Following two fielding errors to allow Evan Harasta and Matt Hinchy on base, and a passed ball that advanced Harasta to third base, Matt Codispoti hit a sacrifice fly to right field to send in Harasta across home plate, putting UAlbany just one run behind.

The Bears loaded the bases with walks to Pat Lagravinese and Karson Canaday, which allowed Kevin Donati to hit a single to bring in Hinchy from third and tying the game at two.

In the top of the fifth, after Kyle Sacks advanced to second on two errors by NYIT, Matt Hinchy hit a single up the middle that would send Sacks home by soaring over the catcher and landing safe at home, giving UAlbany the lead and winning run, 3-2.

The Great Danes added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh off RBI’s from Hinchy and Codispoti.

Hinchy led the Danes on offense going 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Donati also had two hits with one RBI.

Woods (2-1) picked up the win for UAlbany going 5.0 innings with 11 strikeouts.

Dom Savino earned the save throwing for 2.0 innings and added two strikeouts.

Matt Diaz (1-1) was given the loss for NYIT going 4.0 innings and allowing three earned runs and three walks.

It took six innings to see any action in game two of Saturday’s double header. UAlbany starter Marcus Failing and NYIT starter Marble Dixon were both pitching terrific games up until the bottom of the sixth when the Bears put up their only runs of the game.

Daru began the inning for the Bears with a deep triple to center field and after a walk to Eric Zeppa, Anthony Cardona would hit the ball to Hinchy who attempted to throw it to home to try and tag a charging Daru, but the ball drifted into the dirt and Daru came home giving the Bears the eventual game winning run.

NYIT would add two more that inning, to give them the final score of 3-0.

Failing (0-3) went 5.0 innings with four hits and two strikeouts, while Marble Dixon (2-0) went the distance for NYIT going 7.0 innings with four hits, no earned runs and three strikeouts.

Sacks added two hits in game two and Powers and Canaday added the other two hits for UAlbany in the game.

Matthew DeAngelis had two hits and one RBI for NYIT.

The Danes and the Bears will travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. tomorrow for another doubleheader at MCU Park beginning at noon. Ryan Stinar will face off against Frank Valentino in game one and Joe Romero takes on David Plotkin to close out the series.
