Baseball Unable to Power Past South Carolina, Lose 6-2.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University at Albany Great Danes (0-2, 0-0), were unable to get the bats going with the exception of a Connor Powers two-run home run in the fourth inning and dropped their second game to the University of South Carolina(2-0, 0-0), 6-2.
In the bottom half of the second inning, starter Marcus Failing got Jonah Bride to pop up to shortstop Kevin Donati before, sophomore designated hitter, John Jones sent the ball over the left field wall to give the Gamecocks a early 1-0 lead.
South Carolina would pick up its second run of the day in the bottom of the third when Marcus Mooney would lay down the sacrifice bunt sending in Chris Cullen from third. Mooney reached first base on a throwing error from Failing.
The Danes would respond in the top of the fourth, as Canaday would be sent to first after being walked by Braden Webb. Powers then came to the plate and homered over the right field wall, tying the ball game at two.
The Gamecocks would retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning at 3-2, following a single to left field by Cullen, which brought in Jones all the way from second base.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cullen dropped a single into left field, bringing in Jones from second base to push the lead to 4-2 in favor of the Gamecocks.
South Carolina would add to its lead in the seventh inning, after a sharply hit single into center field by Jones, allowing both Thompson and bride to cross home plate, making it 6-2.
“It was a much more competitive game, had the one error mixed in there” said Head Coach Jon Mueller, “Hopefully the bats will get going tomorrow a little bit better.”
Donati picked up the Danes only other hit in the game with a single to right field.
Jones and Cullen both lead the Gamecocks with three hits each, and added three and two RBI’s, respectively.
Failing (0-1), allowed five hits in 5.0 innings pitched and also picked up three strikeouts for his first career start at the college level.
Webb (1-0), picked up the win for the Gamecocks, went 6.0 innings, allowing just the lone home run from Powers and struck out five. Josh Reagan was awarded the save for South Carolina going 1.2 innings, allowing no hits or runs and stuck out four Danes.
The Danes and the Gamecocks will close out their series tomorrow at Founders Park starting at 1:30 p.m. Junior Ryan Stinar gets the start for UAlbany, while junior Taylor Widener take the mound for South Carolina.
