CHAMPS! Men’s Track And Field Wins Ninth Straight America East Outdoor Title


VESTAL, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s and women’s track and field programs swept the America East Outdoor Championship hardware for the fifth straight season Sunday afternoon at Binghamton University. The first-place men accrued 230.5 points, which was 54 points better than second-place UMBC. The women were also dominant, besting their nearest opponent by 109 points with a total of 245 points in the title meet.

In 2012-13, UAlbany took home all four America East track and field titles, sweeping the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor championships. The men have now won 10 outdoor titles since 2003, including nine consecutive victories.

Sophomore Alexander Bowen was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer for the second time this year, garnering the same accolade at the Indoor Championship. Bowen broke the conference record in the high jump, clearing 7’ 3.25 – nine inches better than his closest opponent and the same height he won the indoor title with. Bowen also placed fourth in the triple jump with a personal-best 47’ 1.75” leap.

Teammate Stephen Crouse captured the triple jump title with a bound 49’ 0.25”, representing one of four event titles the Great Danes claimed. In addition to Crouse and Bowen, freshman Taariq Jones and the 4x400m and 4x800m relay squads all took home golds.

Jones ran a mark of 47.35 in his winning 400m dash performance, qualifying the freshman for USA Junior Nationals, as well as representing the 45th-best run in the East Region. Teammate Alex Petit-Frere took second, qualifying for IC4As with a time of 47.55.

Jones and Petit-Frere also led UAlbany to a win in the 4x400m relay. They were joined by senior Franklin Berkeley and sophomore Diamere Nabinett, running an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:15.40.

The 4x800m relay squad consisting of junior Dylan Lowry, senior Nicolas Santos, sophomore John DeLallo, and junior Youness Benzaid also qualified for IC4As with a victorious finishing mark of 7:32.52.

Other highlights included Andrew Pirnie’s second place finish in the 800m run, qualifying for IC4As with a time of 1:51.56. Benzaid came in third in the race, running a 1:52.46.

In the 1500m run, DeLallo placed fifth with an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:48.79. Fellow distance runners Christopher Buchanan came in third in the 5000m run with a time of 15:04.70 and senior Aliaksandr Leuchanka placed second in a close 10000m run with a mark of 31:42.82 – just two tenths of a second off the leader. Senior Ethan Clary (9:21.19) and James Sommer (9:22.52) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 3000m steeplechase.

Jeremiah Obeng-Agyapong came in second in the 400m hurdles, qualifying the freshman for IC4As and USA Junior Nationals.

In the field, junior Alfonso Scannapieco placed second in the pole vault, clearing 15’ 9”, while also placing third in the long jump (23’ 1.75”). Also in the long jump, senior Kadeem Howell (23’ 2.5”) placed second and Crouse (22’ 11.75”) took fourth. Lastly, senior Sean Cooper scored 6,166 points in the decathlon, placing fourth.

Up next, UAlbany will compete at the IC4A/ECAC Championships hosted by Princeton University, May 10-12.
