Track And Field Commences Outdoor Campaign In Puerto Rico

ALBANY, N.Y. – Coming off an outstanding indoor season,
including a sweep of the America East Conference titles, the University at
Albany track and field program will open its outdoor season Saturday in
Carolina, Puerto Rico. The Great Danes will compete in the 7th Annual Carolina
Spring Break Classic at the Basilio Rodriguez Track and Field Stadium. The meet
begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
UAlbany closed the 2012-13 indoor season at the IC4A/ECAC Championships. The
women's team recorded its best finish ever, placing fourth out of 53 competing
teams. Junior Kathryn Fanning shattered her already owned school record in the
mile, posting a title-winning time of 4:43.23. With little time to recover,
Fanning (2:11.4 ) also anchored a program record-breaking 4x800m relay
performance along with Jonelle White (2:14), Mackenzie Carter (2:16), and Sherez
Mohamed (2:12.3). The squad placed third with their time of 8:53.94. Senior Pat
McNish captured the triple jump title with a leap of 41' 3.75” (12.59m) and also
placed second in the long jump with a 19' 6.75” (5.96m) mark, earning a total
of 18 points for the team.
The men placed 12th out of 44 competing teams. Sophomore John
DeLallo was stellar in the 1,000m run, earning eight points for UAlbany in
second place. He recorded a time of 2:24.63, as just tenths of a second
separated the field. The men's 4x400m relay team posted its best indoor time in
three years, placing fifth and garnering four points for the Danes. Alex
Petit-Frere (48.7), Jonathan Santana (46.7), Taariq Jones (47.9), and Ryan
Small (48.5) shared the legs, as they combined for a time of 3:12.03. Petit-Frere
also earned three points individually for his team, as he placed sixth in the
400m dash with a time of 48.54. In the field, sophomore Alexander Bowen
rounded out UAlbany's point-scorers, placing third in the high jump with a
height of 6' 11” (2.11m).
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Announced by the league office Wednesday, the UAlbany indoor track
and field program placed three men and one woman on the 2012-2013 America East
All-Academic team. The team honors 10 men and 10 women who have excelled both
academically and athletically this season. Sophomore John DeLallo, senior Jake
Rachiele, and junior Daryl Subran were selected to the men's squad, while
junior Kathryn Fanning represented the Great Danes on the women's team.

UALBANY QUICK HITS
▪ The Great Danes swept the America East's men's and women's indoor
championship titles on Feb. 12th.
▪ Both teams broke the conference record for points scored. The men earned
231.50 points and the women 233.50.
▪ The UAlbany athletic department has now won 61 conference championships at
the Division I level, including 28 by the track and field program.
▪ Both the men's and women's 4x200m relay squads shattered the program and meet
records at the 106th Millrose Games (2/16).
THE MEN
▪ The men tied a conference record for total indoor titles, 10, done in the
fastest amount of time for a member school – 11 years.
▪ The men have won eight straight America East indoor titles.
▪ Alexander Bowen, the Most Outstanding Field Performer, highlighted the meet
with an America East record 7' 3.25” leap in the high jump.
▪ Senior Jonathan Santana also earned meet honors, earning 28 points for his
team. With a 48.60 time, Santana placed first in the 400m dash, finished second
in the 200m (22.11), and anchored the winning 4x400m relay team (3:17.41).
▪ The men's side won the America East Coaching Staff of the Year honor.
▪ John DeLallo captured the 1,000m title with a 2:27.64 mark.
▪ Alfonso Scannapieco captured the heptathlon crown with a total of 5,124
points, as well as the pole vault title, clearing 16' 2.75”.
THE WOMEN
▪ The women captured their third AEast indoor championship in four years.
▪ Winning eight individual titles as a team, junior Kathryn Fanning led the
squad with triumphs in the 1,000m (2:50.36) and mile run (4:46.64).
▪ Senior Pat McNish won the long jump title for a second straight year with a
bound of 19' 9”
▪ The women's distance medley relay team smoked its conference competitors,
winning by over a 10 second margin. The squad consisting of Brianne Bellon, Sherez
Mohamed, Jonelle White, and Miranda McConnell earned 10 points for the Danes
with their ECAC qualifying time of 11:47.23.
▪ Senior Alli Rogers captured the 400m dash title with a mark of 55.34.
▪ Sophomore Michelle Anthony placed first in the 60m hurdles with a time of
8.72.
▪ On the field side, Rochelle Reid's 5' 7” leap in the high jump earned the
title for the junior.
▪ Freshman Solene Bastien captured the triple jump title with a mark of 39' 4”.
UP NEXT
UAlbany will travel directly from Puerto Rico to Orlando, Fla. to compete in
the University of Central Florida Invitational, March 22-23.
