CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Announced by the league office Wednesday,
the University at Albany indoor track and field program has placed three men
and one woman on the 2012-2013 America East All-Academic team. The team honors
10 men and 10 women who have excelled both academically and athletically this
season.
Sophomore John DeLallo, senior Jake Rachiele, and junior
Daryl Subran were selected to the men's squad, while junior Kathryn Fanning
represented the Great Danes on the women's team.
Helping UAlbany win its eighth straight America East title, John
DeLallo captured the 1,000m title with a 2:27.64 mark. He also ran a time of 2:24.63,
placing second in the 1,000m run at the IC4A Championship, and was a member of
UAlbany's 4x800m relay team that ran a 7:40.50 at the 106th Millrose Games. A physics major, DeLallo boasts a 3.81
cumulative grade point average.
Also a physics major with a 3.65 GPA, Jake Rachiele placed
fourth in the 200m dash (22.57/22.66P) at the America East Championship and fifth
in the 60m dash (7.07/6.99P). Earlier in the season, he helped UAlbany's 4x200m
relay team place fourth (1:27.92) at the Armory Collegiate Invitational (2/2).
Rachiele is a first-time honoree on the academic squad.
Daryl Subran, a biology major boasting a 3.75 cumulative
GPA, was a member of UAlbany's distance medley relay team that placed fourth at
the America East Championship with an IC4A qualifying time of 10:15.72. He was
also a member of UAlbany's 4x800m relay team that ran a 7:40.50 at the 106th
Millrose Games, as well as a 7:38.61 at the Armory Collegiate Invitational
(2/2).
On the women's side, Kathryn Fanning was a unanimous
selection having been an absolute standout on the track and in the classroom.
Fanning broke a program record and qualified for ECACs in every event she
competed in this season, leading UAlbany with individual triumphs in the 1,000m
(2:50.36) and mile run (4:46.64) at the America East Championship. She also led
the program to its best-ever finish at the ECAC Championship. There, she
shattered her already owned school record in the mile with a title-winning time
of 4:43.23. With little time to recover, Fanning (2:11.4) also anchored a
program record-breaking 4x800m relay performance. The week before, Fanning ran
the 1600m leg of the distance medley relay at the 106th Millrose Games, breaking
the program record with a time of 11:34.18. Academically, Fanning owns a 3.99
cumulative GPA as a biology major and is well on her way to her goal of
attending medical school.
The All-Academic squads are a product of the June 2005
Athletics Directors meeting where faculty representatives and athletics
directors from each of the conference's nine member institutions decided to
honor the league's top student-athletes, who excel equally in the classroom as
they do on the playing field.
Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by
member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs,
academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member
institutions.
All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number
of athletes that participate in a contest at one time or are made up of 10
student-athletes for individual sports. To be nominated for the distinction,
student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and
participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions. In
the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at
least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for
consideration.
