Brostrom and Pope Combine for 41 Kills to Lead UAlbany to a 3-1 Win Over Hartford

HARTFORD, CONN. -- Sophomores Samantha Brostrom and Sara Pope combined for 41 of UAlbany's 57 kills, as the Great Danes defeated Hartford, 3-1, in America East Conference volleyball action on Sunday afternoon. UAlbany posted set scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-15 in the win.
Pope led all players with 21 kills, while Brostrom recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 12 digs. Senior Traci Vandegrift also finished with a double-double, but of the assist-dig variety, as she recorded a team-high 23 digs and 14 assists. Vandegrift also served up three aces, five kills and three block assists. The Great Danes hit .219 as a team, thanks in part to the sure hands of Gabby Whitworth, who handed out 39 assists. UAlbany also outblocked Hartford, 9-4, with Alberte Bjornsson had seven total blocks, including three solo.
Hartford (8-15, AE 2-5) had four players in double-digit kill totals, led by Taylor McCreery with 13. Sareeta and Kami Nethersole each finished with double-doubles to pace the Hawks offensively and defensivesly. Setter Jackie Tamburri also recorded a double-double of 44 assists and 14 digs.
UAlbany (10-12, AE 7-0), which remains the last undefeated team in league play, will return to action on Friday, hosting Stony Brook at 7 p.m.
