Stony Brook, N.Y.- Both Kyle Apostolina and Alexa Toole were able to hit homeruns in the doubleheader loss to Stony Brook, 5-2 and 3-1, on Saturday, May 5 at University Field. With the losses, UAlbany sits at 12-5 and will be the No. 3 seed in the America East Conference Tournament.
Apostolina went 2-for-5 with a single and home run and Alexa Toole recorded UAlbany's only other earned run with a home run.
Stony Brook (35-15-1, 14-2-1 AE), in game one, got on the board first in the bottom of the second and third with five runs. Bernadette Tenuto drove in the game's first run with a homer to left field in the bottom of the second. Then in the bottom of the third, UAlbany pitcher Brittany MacFawn (17-5) hit two consecutive batters which was then followed by three consecutive hits, two were rbi-singles and a sacrifice fly.
UAlbany (33-12, 12-5 AE) responded in the top of the fifth with two solo homeruns, one from Apostolina to left center and one from Toole to right center, to cut the deficit to three, 5-2. Then in the top of the seventh, the Danes looked to begin a one-out rally by loading the bases with a single from Katie Wambold, a single by Apostolina and a walk by pinch-hitter Emily Ostrom.
Stony Brook pitcher Allison Cukrov (24-7) finished the top of the seventh bases-loaded situation with back-to-back strikeouts to win game one. Cukrov would hold UAlbany's 1 through 4 batters to 0-for-11. UAlbany's MacFawn was charged with the loss, going six innings of five-run ball (three earned) with eight hits and one strikeout.
UAlbany jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Diane MacDowell began with a single through the right side. Charlise Castro then hit a single up the middle to drive in MacDowell.
Great Danes' pitcher Brittany Schwieger (14-5) held the Seawolves batter to no farther than second base through four innings.
But in the bottom of the fifth, Stony Brook lead off with two singles, one from Tenuto and the other from Jessica Combs. Schwieger would then get the next to batters with a pop-up and a strikeout. Suzanne Kurath would ground to the shortstop Alexa Toole, who would allow the inning to continue with a throwing error.
The Seawolves would tack on three runs in the inning to capture game two of the doubleheader.
UAlbany will finish its 2012 schedule on Sunday for the series final against Stony Brook on Sunday, May 6 (12 pm).
