Albany, N.Y.- The University at Albany Tennis Team went 1-1 this weekend with a loss against Fordam, 6-1, on Saturday but bounced back with a win versus Hofstra, 5-2, on Sunday at the Tri-City Tennis Club. Freshman Kirsten Scott went 2-0 at the number four singles. Senior Aubrey Brooks and junior Sarah Iannone were perfect 2-0 as well at the number three doubles. The Great Danes look ahead to Sacred Heart on the road on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Yale Tennis Tennis Club.
On Superbowl Sunday, UAlbany was able to take care of business as the number three doubles of Brooks and Iannone followed by Scott and freshman Cheryl Kukkonen, in that order, were able to take the doubles point to begin the match with the Great Danes up 1-0.
UAlbany wouldn't need to wait much longer for the match to be won as the number four Kirsten Scott, number two Livia Gherman, and number one Rocio Alberca Lopez, in that order, were able to defeat their opponents in straight sets to take the match, 4-0. Brooks, in the number six singles, would win her match in straight sets as well to give UAlbany a total of five points for the match.
On Saturday, the Great Danes opened up their home opener against Fordham, who proved to be a tough Atlantic-10 opponent by opening the match down 1-0 after dropping the doubles points. Number three doubles partner's of Brooks/Iannone were able to win their first match but the Rams of Fordham would win the next two to grab the point.
Kirsten Scott would open up the singles half of the match with the first win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Fordham would look to clinch the match in the number five singles but it wouldn't be easy. Sarah Iannone took her opponent in three sets only to fall in the third set to give the Rams of Fordham the victory.
