Softball Announces 2012 Schedule

Albany, N.Y. - UAlbany softball head coach Chris Cannata has announced the four-time America East Champion Great Danes' 2012 schedule. UAlbany will begin the season with three non-conference tournaments that include the Eagle Classic hosted by Georgia Southern, adidas Invitational hosted by Winthrop University and the Cherry Blossom Classic hosted by George Mason. After the three tournaments, UAlbany will return to New York where it will host 13 games on eight dates at Albany Field before ending the season on the road against rival Stony Brook, in the program's quest for back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and its fifth in eight years.
     UAlbany will begin the season on Feb. 24-26 at the Eagle Classic at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. The Great Danes will face North Florida, Jacksonville State, Radford and the host Eagles.
     The Great Danes will head north one state above Georgia to the Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. on March 9-13. The tournament includes opponents such as Campbell, George Washington, UNC Wilmington, the host Eagles, and a final day opponent to be determined by seeding after the first five games.
     UAlbany concludes its early season tournaments by making a trip to Fairfax, Va. for the Cherry Blossom Classic. The Great Danes face off against Bowling Green, the host Patriots, and Cornell, who they will see later on in the regular season as a double-header in Ithaca, N.Y.
     UAlbany's "colder" part of the schedule begins on March 24-25 with the America East-opening series at UMBC before hosting cross-town rivals Siena on March 29 for the home-opener at Albany Field. The Great Danes continue their homestand with a three-game series against Maine (March 31-April 1). The five-game homestand between Maine and Siena will be the Great Danes longest home stretch all season.
     UAlbany then goes on its longest road trip with three doubleheader's, the first vs. Cornell (Apr. 3), then Colgate (Apr. 4), and finally versus Hartford (April7) which will conclude with a third game against Hartford on Apr. 8.The Great Danes then play the next five opponents switching from home and away starting with Bryant at home (Apr.10), Manhattan (April 11), Boston U. (April 14-15), Dartmouth (April 18), and Binghamton (April 21-22).
     With a game to be determined on April 26, UAlbany plays cross-town rivals Siena (May 2) for the second time in a doubleheader then finishes the season against Stony Brook (May 5-6) to close out the 2012 regular season.
     The 2012 America East Championship will be played on May 10-12 at the highest seed's home field
