Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany's head women's basketball coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson announced today the hiring of Adam Barrett as assistant coach. Barrett has worked for more than a decade at the collegiate and high school level.
Barrett brings a multitude of coaching experience to the UAlbany program. He has served as the director of the Tarkanian Basketball Facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, and acted as a personal trainer for several National Basketball Association (NBA) and college players. Barrett owned and coached the Utah Swoosh basketball club team from 2008-10, after five years as the head girls' basketball coach at Auburn Riverside High School in the state of Washington.
While at Auburn Riverside, Barrett led the Ravens to back-to-back state championships in 2007 and 2008. He was chosen the Washington State Coach of the Year after winning 52 of 57 games, plus coached consecutive state players of the year. The Auburn Riverside team finished the 2008 season ranked 11th nationally. In his first season at Auburn Riverside in 2004, he guided the Ravens to the school's first state tournament for a boys' or girls' team. He followed up with the first winning season in school history the next year. Barrett coached 22 players during a six-year period who have signed with NCAA Division I basketball programs and has mentored three of the top 20 point guards in the nation over the last three seasons.
Barrett began his coaching career as a men's assistant at Eastern Oregon University, an NAIA Division II program, in the 2000-01 campaign. He moved to the scholastic ranks as the head girls' basketball coach at Grant Union High School, where he was voted league coach of the year in 2003 and helped the squad finish seventh at Oregon state championships. Barrett also coached the girls' volleyball team to a state runner-up finish.
In addition, Barrett has extensive experience in scouting and film exchange, and has developed strength and conditioning and "pre-hab" programs to prevent injuries to student-athletes. He has also developed fundraising and community service activities.
A 2002 graduate of Eastern Oregon University, Barrett earned his degree in health and physical education. He and his wife, Stephanie, have an infant son, Cash. His brother, Jared, is currently a men's basketball assistant at Washington State University.
