Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced on Thursday, June 2 the school's men's soccer schedule for the 2011 season. Under first-year head coach Trevor Gorman, UAlbany plays 17 matches, including seven against America East Conference opponents.
     UAlbany starts the non-conference portion of the schedule with a home match against Hartwick, one of two Mid-American Conference opponents, on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 4:00 p.m. The Great Danes travel to Colonial Athletic Association member Hofstra on Monday, Aug. 29.
     The Great Danes begin September with matches against New Jersey Tech, of the Atlantic Soccer Conference, and MAC member Buffalo. Gorman will then take his team to the Binghamton Classic on Sept. 16 and 18. UAlbany squares off with Rider in Friday's opening round at 5:00 p.m., before tangling with Northeast Conference opponent Central Connecticut State on Sunday at 12 noon.
     UAlbany has four other non-league opponents on the slate, including Patriot League regular-season winner Colgate on Oct. 4. The Great Danes also face Towson (Sept. 20) and Lehigh, the runner-up in the Patriot standings, on Oct. 18. The annual Capital Region matchup with Siena is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 p.m. The Great Danes have won twice and tied in the last three meetings with the Saints.
     The Great Danes meet defending conference champion and NCAA second-round participant UMBC to begin America East play on Saturday, Oct. 1. Hartford (Oct. 8), Boston U. (Oct. 22) and New Hampshire (Oct. 29) will travel UAlbany's Varsity Field for conference clashes.
     Gorman, who was hired as head coach last February, previously worked at Wright State and Dartmouth as an assistant. Anthony DeSalvo, a senior midfielder, and Christoffer Nisser, a sophomore defender, each started all 16 matches last season. Goalkeeper Adrian Foncette posted a 1.71 goals against average with a .768 save percentage.
