Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore right-hander Kasceim Graham threw a complete game in leading UAlbany to a 4-1 victory over regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Stony Brook in an America East Conference Tournament elimination game on Friday, May 27 at Joe Nathan Field. UAlbany advanced to the conference tournament championship round for the third consecutive year. The Great Danes will face Maine at 3:00 p.m. today.
Once again, the game was a pitcher's duel through four innings, before Stony Brook (42-12) put one run on the board in the top of the fifth. Sal Intagliata doubled into left field and advanced to third on a ground out. Pat Cantwell recorded a sacrifice fly into center, and Intagliata scored the game's first run, just getting past UAlbany catcher Vincent Martorelli.
In the seventh, UAlbany (21-30) took the lead on D.J. Hoagboon's double that scored Mike Tirri and Martorelli. UAlbany added two more runs in the frame, getting RBI singles from Nolan Gaige and Kyle Crean, scoring Hoagboon and Ralph Rizzo. With two outs, the Great Danes loaded the bases when Greg Muller was hit by a pitch, but Stony Brook reliever James Campbell induced a ground out to get the Seawolves out of the jam.
UAlbany's Graham got three quick outs in the top of the eighth, including striking out Maxx Tissenbaum swinging to end the inning. Graham came back out to the mound in the ninth, and hit Stephen Marino, who then advanced on a passed ball. A second hit batter put the tying run at the plate in Travis Jankowski, but Graham struck him out swinging for the first out of the inning. A fly out to left and a ground out to first ended the game in UAlbany's favor, with a Great Dane pitcjer throwing a complete game for the second time in as many games.
Graham improved to 4-2 on the season, and put together his first complete game of the year by fanning seven batters while scattering six hits. Stony Brook starter Brandon McNitt went 6.2 innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.
The Seawolves, who defeated UAlbany in last year's championship, had won all five meetings this spring, including a 14-2 victory in the opening round of this double-elimination tournament on Wednesday.
