Staten Island, N.Y. - Josh Thompson had 18 of his 24 points in the second half in leading Wagner to an 80-65 non-league victory over UAlbany on Thursday, Dec. 30 at Spiro Sports Center. The Seahawks, who were playing for the first time in nine days, ended a four-game losing streak.
Wagner (5-7) reversed a six-point halftime deficit with a 13-3 run to start the period. Orlando Parker put his team ahead, 41-40, with a free throw, before Tyler Murray hit a three-point field goal from the left wing for a 46-42 advantage. The Seahawks, who have won all five meetings in this series, shot 50 percent in the second half.
Thompson, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, later keyed an 11-2 outburst that helped his squad build a 61-50 margin. Reserve guard Danny Mundweiler ignited that stretch with a 3-pointer from the right side. Thompson added a free throw and made a triple from the right corner to end that run midway through the period. He later scored off an offensive rebound following a missed free throw and connected on a conventional three-point play that gave the Seahawks a commanding 71-54 lead with 4:42 to play.
"They played physical and were tougher than us," said UAlbany coach Will Brown, whose team was held to 33.3-percent shooting on 15-of-45 attempts. "They bothered us with their ball pressure and I was disappointed that we didn't respond to the physical play. Our perimeter guys got tired in the second half."
In the first half, UAlbany (7-8) canned three long-range jumpers in leaping to a 9-0 lead. The Great Danes eventually pushed out to a 10-point margin on Tim Ambrose's basket and a pair of free throws by John Puk. Wagner still trailed 24-17, but then ran off seven unanswered. Latif Rivers, a freshman guard, made a 17-footer from the right side in transition to draw his team even.
Luke Devlin, who had a career-high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Mike Black each sank a pair of free throws to break a 27-all deadlock. Black, who had a team-high 18 points, later drilled a three-point field goal from the top of the arc after an offensive rebound and Devlin drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner, as their team took a 39-33 lead to the intermission.
Murray finished with 17 points for the Seahawks, who recorded their 1,000th win as a college basketball program. Ambrose was the third UAlbany player in double figures with 15 and extended his double-figure scoring steak to 15 in a row.
Paw Prints: UAlbany has lost all five meetings with Wagner, including a 66-65 decision the last time the programs met on Nov. 27, 2004 ... the Great Danes are 29-40 all-time against Northeast Conference teams ... UAlbany previously met Fairleigh Dickinson, Central Connecticut State and Mount Saint Mary's this season ... the Great Danes were attempting to match their Division I record of eight non-conference wins in a season which was established in 2008-09 ... Luke Devlin recorded his second double-double of the season ... Wagner is coached by Dan Hurley, who was a 1,000-point scorer at Seton Hall ... Hurley's brother, Bobby, serves as assistant coach ... Bobby led Duke to a pair of national championships in 1991 and 1992 ... Tim Ambrose upped his career scoring total to 1,316 points and ranks 12th on the list.
