Central Connecticut State Downs Women's Soccer, 3-0, on Three Second-Half Goals

Albany, N.Y. - Allison Kelley scored twice in the second half in leading Central Connecticut State to a 3-0 victory over UAlbany in a non-conference women's soccer matchup on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Varsity Field.
After a scoreless and evenly played first half, UAlbany came out strong after the recess and gained several scoring chances in the opening part of the second frame. In the 59th minute, Maggie DeVerna took a pass from Rebecca Lee and dribbled in towards an unprotected Nikola Deiter. A Blue Devil defender, however, caught up to the Great Dane sophomore and disrupted her shot at the last moment to keep the match scoreless.
Just two minutes later, the hosts almost got on the board again when Casey Marks sent a free kick from the middle of the field to open space in the box on the left side. Coming from the right, Chelsea DeVerna beat several Blue Devil defenders to the ball and fired an off-balance shot that went just wide of the goal.
Shortly afterwards, the tide completely turned as Central Connecticut State (4-5) came back the other way and netted two quick goals. Alyssa Gillespie took a hard shot from outside of the box near the left sideline which was initially saved and bobbled by Dani Britt. Kelley got to the loose ball first and scored on an uncontested shot to put the visitors ahead in the 65th minute. Rachel Cerrone doubled the lead just 4:41 later when she took a pass from Beth Lloyd and unleashed a shot from 20 yards out to the near post. Kelley found the back of the net for the second time in the 84th minute to seal the outcome.
UAlbany's Britt made her fourth consecutive start and took the loss after making six saves, including five in the first half and one on a shot attempted by Lloyd from point-blank range in the 15th minute. Breanna Maggio, who entered the match directly after the second goal was scored, stopped one of the three shots she saw in a relief effort. CCSU's Deiter made seven saves and was credited with her first shutout win.
UAlbany (4-5) wraps up its non-conference portion of the schedule when it visits Bryant on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m.
