Clearwater,
Fla. ? Garrett Young doubled in a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to
lead Liberty to a 5-4 win over UAlbany in non-conference baseball action as
part of the Clearwater Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Jack Russell
Stadium in Clearwater, Fla. The game was suspended due to rain for over six and
one-half hours in the bottom of the third inning.
UAlbany (0-2) jumped out to a 3-0
lead in the top of the second inning. Junior left fielder Gary Pitcheralle
tripled to right field to drive in shortstop Sean Donovan for the Great Danes'
first run. Third baseman Zac Halloran followed with an RBI double to right
center to plate Pitcheralle. Senior catcher Tom Zink plated Halloran from third
base on a two-out single to second base.
The Flames cut their deficit to one
with two runs in the bottom of the third. Shortstop Aaron Phillips and center
fielder Tim Rotola led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to score one
run prior to the stoppage in play. After play resumed, Rotola scored with one
out on a wild pitch.
Liberty (2-0) took a 4-3 lead with a pair of
runs in the sixth inning. Joseph Feeley singled up the middle with one out to
score Aaron Grijalva from third base. The Flames scored their second run of the
inning on a groundout to Donovan.
The Great Danes responded in the top
of the seventh to tie the game at four. Junior designated hitter Ryan Gugel
drilled a one-out home run to right field to knot the score. With two outs in
the bottom of the seventh, Young doubled down the left field line to drive in
Kenneth Negron from first base.
Junior Sean Gregory took the loss
for the Great Danes, allowing one run on one hit over two innings. Junior Nate
Novak struck out four, while yielding two runs on two hit for UAlbany over the
first two innings, before being removed from the game following the rain delay.
Cory Warrings struck out three batters over four innings in relief of Novak. Dustin
Umberger earned the win for Liberty,
striking out four over two and two-thirds scoreless innings.
UAlbany was led at the plate by
Donovan and Pitcheralle, who each registered two hits and a run scored.
The Great Danes close out their trip
to the Clearwater Invitational against Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
