Albany, N.Y. ? Laura Martel scored a pair of goals to pace Maine to a 4-0 America East Conference win over UAlbany in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Great Danes fall to 3-4-3 (AE 0-1) on the season, while the Black Bears improve to 3-4-2 (AE 1-0).
Laura Harper finished a cross from Veronique Fleury eight minutes into the game to give Maine an early 1-0 lead. Fleury sent the ball into the box from the right flank and found Harper on the far post for the tap-in. Martel gave Maine a 2-0 lead 29th minute when she headed home a Kim Stephenson free kick from the left of the box and the Black Bears would take the two-goal advantage into the intermission.
Maine dominated the second half and Martel got her second goal of the contest at the 65:43 mark when she dribbled through the heart of the box and beat Great Danes goalkeeper Maria Liguori to the lower right corner. Fluery would add a goal with less than three minutes left in the game when she chipped a shot over Liguori for the 4-0 final.
Maine had a 20-7 shot advantage and recorded 12 corner kicks to UAlbany's one. Liguori finished with nine saves, while Jasmine Phillips stopped two shots for the Black Bears.
The Great Danes will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 4 when they host Boston University at 3 p.m. in conference action.
