Indoor Track To Compete At Penn State National Invitational
Albany, N.Y.—After a strong performance this past week at the Upstate Challenge, the University at Albany track and field program will continue their third consecutive weekend of competition when they travel to the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track for the Penn State National Invitational.
“This is an opportunity for great performances,” said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives. “The team is excited to be matched against high quality athletes, and we’re looking to break a few school records.”
This highly competitive two-day meet will field 38 top-level schools with some ranked in the top-25. The women will see nationally ranked teams including, Georgetown (10), Stanford (14), and Akron (25). The men will face Virginia Tech (4), Stanford (14), Penn State (21), and Georgetown (3), amongst many others.
In the past, the Great Danes have used Penn State as an opening meet for the indoor season. With more experience under their belts, the coaching staff hope that the student-athletes will utilize the high-quality facility to the best of their ability. Over 40 student-athletes are set to compete with many looking for ECAC/IC4A qualifying and national marks.
“We’re taking our top level athletes,” said Vives.“So far, we’ve had 22 individuals qualify for ECAC and IC4A, and we'd like to see those numbers go up. This is the part of the season where the team will learn to compete at a higher level. We’re raising the bar and the quality.”
The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday, January 29 at 12:00 PM, and will continue on Saturday, January 30 at 11:00 AM with track events followed by field events at 12:00 PM. Live results will be posted daily by GoPSUsports.com, and a live stream of the meet is available for those with a FloPro account.
