EUGENE, Ore. – Competing on Day One of the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon, University at Albany freshman Adrian Mitchell placed 14th in the men's javelin throw among the final field of 24 competitors. Mitchell earned All-America Second Team honors with his finish in the top 16 competitors in the field.
Mitchell placed fourth overall in the first of two flights Wednesday afternoon. In his first of three throws, Mitchell recorded a mark of 215-07.00. He would improve in each of his next two attempts, throwing 221-10.00 on his second throw and 224-10.00 on his third and final throw.
The top nine competitors earned three additional throws, but despite recording the fourth-best throw through the completion of the first flight, Mitchell dropped to 14th after the second flight had finished. His best mark on Wednesday was also his second-best of the season, behind only his 227-02.00 from the Beach Invitational, a mark which would have only moved him up to 13th overall.
Mitchell closes out the 2016-17 UAlbany collegiate season, and will join his teammates for offseason training in anticipation of next year.
