Outdoor Tracks Returns South for East Prelims
ALBANY, N.Y.—Only a week off the ECAC/IC4A Championships, a select few group of student-athletes on the University at Albany track & field team will compete this weekend in the NCAA East Preliminary Championships.
“We are excited to have 10 qualifiers for the NCAA Preliminary Championship in Jacksonville,” said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives. “This group represents our most ever. I feel that they are ready to do some great things and we can have some qualifiers to the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Oregon. Go Danes!”
The traveling athletes represent the largest accepted group for UAlbany since the NCAA moved to the current format. The Great Danes have earned 10 acceptances with two women and eight men set to compete in the East Preliminary field.
The roster of competitors includes Anika Hibbard, Grace Claxton, Jonathan Eustache, Myles Banfield, Taariq Jones, Alexander Bowen, Kingsley Ogbonna, Matthew Campbell, Devon Willis, and Robert Harris III.
In the Eastern Prelim qualifying rankings, Senior Alexander Bowen is 8th in the men’s high jump with a mark of 7’2¼”. Senior Grace Claxton is 10th in the women’s 400 hurdles with her time of 56.69. Junior Kinglsey Ogbonna is tied for 17th with his mark of 7’1” in the high jump. Junior Matthew Campbell is also tied for 17th with a mark of 7’1” in the high jump. Anika Hibbard is 31st in the women’s high jump with her mark of 5’9.25”. Junior Robert Harris III is tied for 41st in the men’s 100 with a time of 10.42. Junior Jonathan Eustache is 43rd in the men’s discus with a mark of 175’10”. Senior Taariq Jones is 46th in the 400 with a time of 46.86. Sophmore Devon Willis is 46th in the men’s triple jump with his mark of 50’4”. Freshmen Myles Banfield follows in 49th with a time of 46.93.
After the first round of both the east and west champions, the top 12 athletes will advance to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, beginning June 8 until June 11.
The Great Danes will travel to the Univeristy of North Florida in Jacksonville for the East Prelims, starting on Thursday, May 26 and concluding on Sunday, May 28.
