Outdoor Track Kicks Off Season In Warmer Weather
ALBANY, N.Y.—Shortly after concluding their indoor season, The University at Albany track & field program is back in action for the outdoor season. The Great Danes have split up for spring break with part of the team traveling down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to start the season at the 20th Annual Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational. The rest of the team will be competing in Puerto Rico at the 11th Annual Carolina Spring Break Classic.
"It is exciting that we have student-athletes representing UAlbany in South Carolina, Puerto Rico and Portland, Oregon on the same weekend," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives. "This is the start of another great season. Our student-athletes are ready and are looking forward to continue to raise the bar! Go Great Danes around the world!"
The team is traveling to meets in warmer weather at the beginning of the outdoor season with a goal to hit qualifying standards for late-season championship meets, such as the America East Championships, IC4A and ECAC Championships, and East Regional Championships. The coaching staff hopes the student-athletes will use the fitness from the indoor season and the more conducive weather to their advantage. The warmer climate gives the student-athletes a greater chance of success and hitting qualifying marks early on in the season.
Certain standards for Penn Relays or ECAC/IC4A Championships may have already been met during the late indoor season, which means the student-athlete would not have to hit that mark again in their event.
