ALBANY, N.Y.—Shortly after concluding their indoor season, The University at Albany track & field program is back in action for the outdoor season. The Great Danes have split up for spring break with part of the team traveling down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to start the season at the 20th Annual Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational. The rest of the team will be competing in Puerto Rico at the 11th Annual Carolina Spring Break Classic.

"It is exciting that we have student-athletes representing UAlbany in South Carolina, Puerto Rico and Portland, Oregon on the same weekend," said  Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives. "This is the start of another great season.  Our student-athletes are ready and are looking forward to continue to raise the bar! Go Great Danes around the world!"

The team is traveling to meets in warmer weather at the beginning of the outdoor season with a goal to hit qualifying standards for late-season championship meets, such as the America East Championships, IC4A and ECAC Championships, and East Regional Championships. The coaching staff hopes the student-athletes will use the fitness from the indoor season and the more conducive weather to their advantage. The warmer climate gives the student-athletes a greater chance of success and hitting qualifying marks early on in the season.

Certain standards for Penn Relays or ECAC/IC4A Championships may have already been met during the late indoor season, which means the student-athlete would not have to hit that mark again in their event.

Shamrock Invitational: This three-day meet will be held in the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. The field includes over 1,300 athletes with 38 collegiate teams and clubs from around the country being represented, including Clemson, Purdue, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

The meet is set to start on Thursday, March 17 at 11:00 A.M. with the men’s hammer throw. Multi-events will follow at 11:45 A.M. with the 100-meter hurdles in the women’s heptathlon. The men’s decathlon will start at 12:05 P.M. Finally, track events will begin at 7:00 P.M. with the women’s 10,000-meter race. Multi-events will continue Friday, March 18 at 9:00 A.M., followed by the field events at 11:30 A.M. On Saturday, March 19 the final events will conclude, starting with the men’s discus at 9:00 A.M.

Carolina Spring Break Classic: A smaller group of 17 student-athletes, mainly from the sprint group will be traveling with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives. This competition has become a traditional outdoor season-opening meet for UAlbany. Competition will solely take place on Saturday, March 19 in the Basilio Rodriguez Track and Field Stadium. Starting off the meet will be the women’s hammer throw at 8:00 A.M., followed by the men. The women’s collegiate 4x100-meter relay will be the first event on the track at 12:20 P.M.
