#8/9 UAlbany Men's Lacrosse Renews Series at Canisius with Midweek Matchup
BUFFALO, N.Y. – After a year hiatus, the UAlbany men’s lacrosse team and Canisius will renew its series with a Tuesday afternoon game in Buffalo on March 21st at 4 p.m., airing on ESPN3.
The game will be played at the Demske Sports Complex on the Canisius campus in Buffalo.
Both teams are coming off victories in their conference openers. UAlbany has won its last four games, coming off a 17-6 road victory over Vermont on Saturday, to stand at 4-1 overall. Canisius hosted Marist in its MAAC opener on Saturday, winning 17-6 to enter this contest at 3-3 overall.
Following UAlbany's victory over Vermont, UAlbany went up one spot to #8 in the USILA Coaches Poll this week and was placed at #9 in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. Canisius is not ranked in either poll.
The teams last met in 2015 in Buffalo, with UAlbany taking a 26-6 victory. That win evened the series at 2-2 all-time. Before taking off in 2016, UAlbany and Canisius had played every year since 2012.
FIELDS - TOP SCORER IN DIVISION I: Through the first couple weeks of the season, Connor Fields stands as the top scorer of Division I, averaging 7.4 points per game. He currently totals 37 points off 18 goals and 19 assists. He is second in goals per game and first in assists per game.
NEW STARTERS DOMINATING: UAlbany players entering starting roles for the first game are ranking among the top in Division I.
Stepping into the cage for the first time as a starter, JD Colarusso is third in DI with a 65.7% save rate, allowing just 7.61 goals per game.
Freshman faceoff man TD Ierlan is 10th in DI on the X at 62.3%, winning at least 70% in three games, and fourth with 9.2 ground balls per game.
UALBANY #8 IN COACHES POLL, #9 IN MEDIA POLL: In the week five polls of the season, UAlbany rose up one spot to #8 USILA Coaches Poll and went to #9 in the Inside Lacrosse Cascade/Maverik Media Poll.
UAlbany has been in the top-15 of each poll since the start of the season. The Great Danes have been ranked in the top-16 of both polls each week since May 2, 2014.
In the preseason, UAlbany was #13 in the coaches poll and #13 in the media poll. It is the fourth consecutive year that UAlbany has ranked in the top-13 in the preseason.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK: Home is where the heart is for UAlbany, drawing on the home state for most of its roster. Of its 46-man roster, 31 players hail from New York State.
From the USA, other states represented on UAlbany’s roster include Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, Ohio, Utah and Vermont. The team also has four players from Canada.
The team’s diversity is represented on its helmets. Each UAlbany helmet has three flags on the back, representing the United States, Canada and the Iroquois Six Nations.
SCOUTING THE CANISIUS GOLDEN GRIFFINS: Canisius coach Randy Mearns is three wins away from 100 at the school.
The team's leader in scoring is junior attack Connor Kearnan, who has 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points. Senior middie Jeff Edwards stands with six goals and 11 assists while sophomore attack Mario Caito has 10 goals. Freshman Daniel Balawejder is the primary faceoff man at 53.5%.
In the cage is junior Liam Ganzhorn, with a 10.79 goals allowed average and 48.4% save. Protecting him is freshman LSM Reece Eddy with 23 ground balls and nine caused turnovers and sophomore defender Randy Monroe with five caused turnovers.
