SOMERSET, N.J. - Piloting the University at Albany football
team to a 30-20 win over the 23rd nationally ranked University of Maine Black
Bears, senior kicker Sean Kenny and freshman Jojo McClary captured Northeast
Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors,
respectively.
Kenny, a native of Ghent, N.Y., converted on all three of
his field goal attempts and went 3-for-3 on extra-point tries in UAlbany's fifth
win in program history over a ranked opponent, and first since 2009. The senior
placekicker was responsible for the game's first nine points, staking the Great
Danes to a 9-0 halftime lead that they would not relinquish. Following a
scoreless first quarter, Kenny put UAlbany on the board by nailing a 44-yard
field goal with 10:45 remaining before the break. Kenny kicked a
39-yarder to double the Danes' lead and added his third field goal, from 25
yards out, on the last play of the first half. The three field goals tied
UAlbany's single-game record.
McClary made contributions on both defense and special teams
for the fourth consecutive week. The rookie cornerback totaled four
tackles and logged a fumble recovery in UAlbany's road victory. McClary's
most-impactful plays against the CAA opponent came on kick coverage. The Fort
Lauderdale, Fla. native made a tackle on the game's opening kickoff, stopping
the Maine returner two yards short of the 20-yard line. With Albany nursing a
23-13 lead and punting away to Maine early on in the fourth quarter, McClary
snatched the ball right back. The Black Bears' Mauri McDonald fumbled the punt
at his own 17-yard line and McClary was there to fall on it for the Great Danes.
