ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany football team continues its challenging road schedule this weekend when the Great Danes travel to No. 23 Maine Saturday, representing UAlbany's third consecutive away game of over 400 miles. After falling to No. 4 Youngstown State by a single possession last week, UAlbany looks to bounce back and capture its first win over a ranked opponent since 2009, when the Great Danes overcame the No. 20 Black Bears, 20-16. In addition, UAlbany will get a glimpse of their future life in the Colonial Athletic Association when they kick off the non-conference contest at 6:00 p.m. at Alfond Stadium in Orono.

THE UALBANY-MAINE ALL-TIME SERIES
Saturday's meeting will mark the sixth in program history between UAlbany and Maine and fifth in the NCAA Division I FCS era. The Great Danes own a 3-2 advantage in the series that dates back to 1977, as UAlbany won the first contest, 42-39, on the road. However, in recent history, the series is all tied up, 2-2, with both teams looking to take the lead this weekend. In their last clash, Maine came away with a 31-15 win in Albany on Sept. 17, 2011. The last time the Black Bears and Danes played in Orono, UAlbany was victorious in the defensive battle, winning 3-0 on Sept. 2, 2010. All of UAlbany's wins over Maine have been by no more than four points.

UALBANY QUICK HITS
• UAlbany kicked off its 40th season of varsity football vs. Colgate on Sept 1. The 40-23 win, improved the Great Danes' record to 5-9 in season-openers in the Division I FCS era.

• UAlbany is currently tied with Saint Francis and Monmourh at the top of the Northeast Conference standings with a 1-0 NEC mark and 2-1 overall record.
• UAlbany comes off a tough 31-24 loss at No. 5 Youngstown State in a well-played game. It was the first meeting in program history against the Penguins.

THE COACH: Bob Ford is in his 40th season at the helm, coming off his fifth Northeast Conference title in 2011 and fourth NEC Coach of the Year Award. He ranks first among all active NCAA Division I FCS coaches with 257 career victories and is also fourth among the FCS all-time leaders in career victories.

LAST TIME OUT: UAlbany suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday, but not without a fight. The Great Danes were neck-and- neck with No. 5 (now No. 4) Youngstown State until the host Penguins opened up a two-score lead with 2:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. Albany, which posted wins over Colgate and Robert Morris during the season's first two weeks, held an early 7-0 lead over Youngstown in a game that was tied on three separate occasions. Drew Smith hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass with 00:09 remaining in the second quarter and Sean Kenny's ensuing extra point evened the score at 21-21 heading into the break. The score remained deadlocked until YSU's David Brown hit a 25-yard field goal with 2:15 left in the third quarter. Youngstown opened the 2012 season by posting a 31-17 win over ACC-bound Pittsburgh.

PROGRAM HISTORY: UAlbany football started at the club level in 1970, before moving to Division III and varsity status three years later. The Great Danes competed at the Division II level from 1995-98, and won two Eastern Football Conference titles in that period. Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) play arrived in 1999 with membership in the Northeast Conference. UAlbany has won five NEC titles.

THE COACH: Jack Cosgrove has coached in more games than any other head coach in program history (220), has taken part in over 300 games in program history as either a player or coach (assistant and head), and is the leader in program history for career wins with 107. In the last 10 seasons, he has guided Maine to a 72-54 mark, finishing first or second in the conference or division six times, including two Atlantic 10 championships (2001-02), four NCAA FCS playoff appearances (2001, 2002, 2008 & 2011) and led the Black Bears to their first win over an FBS opponent in 2004 when they knocked off Mississippi State, 9-7. The 2011 season proved to be one of the best in program history. The Black Bears, picked ninth in the CAA preseason poll, finished the year as CAA Runners-up after going 6-2 in conference play. The team received an NCAA Playoff berth and a First Round bye. In the Second Round, Maine traveled to a very talented Appalachian State squad and won the contest in impressive fashion, 34-12.

LAST TIME OUT: After falling to Boston College of the ACC, 34-3, in the first game of the season, Maine bounced back to trounce Bryant on the road, 51-7.  David Hood and Rickey Stevens each rushed for over 100 yards and the Black Bears returned a pair of interceptions for scores to improve to 1-1 on the year. Saturday's contest against UAlbany will be Maine's first home game since Nov. 12, 2011. Last season, the Black Bears owned a 4-1 mark on their home field.

• The Great Danes will play a nationally ranked squad for the 21st time in UAlbany's FCS history Saturday.

PREVIEW OF 2013 CAA
The University at Albany's Vice President Athletic Administration and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Lee McElroy and the commissioner of the Colonial Athletic Association Tom Yeager formally announced that the Great Dane football program will be joining the CAA for the 2013 season on Wednesday, August 8. UAlbany and New York state rival Stony Brook will join current CAA members Maine, New Hampshire, James Madison, Delaware, Richmond, William & Mary, Villanova, Rhode Island and Towson beginning next season. Saturday's meeting against the Black Bears will give fans a taste of UAlbany's future. The Great Danes have had success over CAA members, having tallied a 6-5 all-time record. The Danes have previously faced Delaware (1-1 record), Maine (3-2), Towson (2-1) and New Hampshire (0-1). UAlbany will look to expand on its rivalry against Stony Brook, having played the Seawolves 15 times and tallying a record of 10-5 all-time.

CAA STRONG
The CAA had six teams in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 on Monday, led by Old Dominion and James Madison. The CAA had participants in the FCS national championship game in seven of the eight seasons from 2003-2010, including four title winners. Last season, only Maine reached the national quarterfinals before the Black Bears' run ended as well. This season, the CAA again has depth across the board, including ranked teams Old Dominion (No. 5); James Madison (No. 6); Delaware (No. 12); Towson (No. 13), the defending conference champion; New Hampshire (No. 18); and Maine (No. 23).

OFFENSIVE KEY
Sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi was impressive again in his third start, nearly leading the University at Albany to a road win over No. 5 Youngstown State. Fiacchi totaled a career-high 228 yards passing, completing 23-of-35 pass attempts, while throwing two touchdowns. In the first half, the Marcellus, N.Y. native was virtually perfect completing 14-of-15 with a throw-away. Fiacchi also recorded his longest completion of his career, a 44-yard touchdown toss to Cole King on a flea-flicker play.

MORGAN LEADS DEFENSE AT YSU
Senior linebacker Jon Morgan led UAlbany with 10 tackles in their near upset at No. 5 Youngstown State. Morgan held the Missouri Valley Conference's offensive leaders in check as the Guins did not record a passing touchdown in the contest. Relying on their running game, Morgan and the rest of the Great Danes defense held YSU's 52 rushes to an average of just 4.1 yards per carry after the Penguins came into the contest averaging a league-best 5.8 yards per rush. Morgan's 10 tackles moved him into sole possession of 19th all-time at UAlbany with 216 career tackles.

KENNY CAN
Kicker Sean Kenny was perfect against Youngstown State, making all three extra-point kicks, while also drilling a pressured 30-yard field goal. In front of a crowd of 15,840, Kenny made it a one-possession game with 57 seconds remaining with his field goal, but unfortunately YSU was able to handle the onside kick and knee the ball.

FIACCHI FILLING BIG SHOES
Albany marched to a share of the 2011 Northeast Conference crown thanks to a record season by fifth-year senior quarterback Dan Di Lella. Now that the first team all-NEC passer has exhausted his eligibility, the starting quarterback responsibilities have been given to sophomore Will Fiacchi. So far, so good for the 6-foot-3 Fiacchi. Through Week 3, Albany's signal caller leads the NEC in completion percentage (69.1) and passing yards (579). Perhaps the most-telling stat is Fiacchi's 5-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Fiacchi is 56-of-81 passing over three games this season, two of which are victories. Fiacchi leads the conference and ranks 15th in the nation for pass efficiency (147.08) and has recorded over 200 yards passing in back-to-back games.

SOLID START
For the third time in FCS program history, UAlbany started the season 2-0, earning wins over Colgate and Robert Morris. The last time the Great Danes started 2-0 was in 2001 when they burst out to a 5-0 mark to begin the year. For the fourth time in UAlbany's DI history, the Danes have a 2-1 record going into Week 4. A win over Maine would give UAlbany its best start since 2006 and represent the third time the Danes would have a 3-1 record going into Week 5.

KING RECEPTIONS
For the last two games, sophomore wide receiver Cole King has been quarterback Will Fiacchi's go-to guy. At Youngstown, King made seven catches, including a 44-yard touchdown, and totaled 115 receiving yards on the day. The week prior, Fiacchi threw three touchdown passes in the Great Danes' 35-10 NEC victory over Robert Morris and all three went to King. The dynamic pass-catcher hauled in scoring strikes of 40, 9, and 41 yards. King totaled 124 yards on five receptions in what was a breakout performance for the sophomore who showed flashes of brilliance as a rookie in 2011. King currently leads the NEC and ranks 22nd in the nation, averaging 86.67 receiving yards per game.

KIRCHNER CATCHING SECOND
Senior wide receiver Ryan Kirchner sits in third all-time at UAlbany with 134 career receptions. He needs two more receptions to tie for second and 14 more to break Tim Bush's record of 147. In his junior year, wide receiver Ryan Kirchner became the fourth player in school history to surpass 100 career receptions on Nov. 12, 2011. He set the program's FCS single-game record with three touchdown catches vs. Sacred Heart on Nov. 19, and also caught 12 passes against Stony Brook (11/26) to set UAlbany's Division I single-game record. With 56 receptions, he had the fourth-highest single-season total in program history.

KING CATCHES KIRCHNER IN TD GRABS
Cole King became the fifth UAlbany player to ever record three receiving touchdowns in a single game when he did so at Robert Morris (9/8). Teammate Ryan Kirchner is the only other one in the FCS era to do so when he hauled in three against Sacred Heart on Nov. 19, 2011.

DANES' DEFENSE STRONG IN NEC OPENER
UAlbany's relentless pursuit of the quarterback resulted in five sacks and two interceptions for its defense at Robert Morris on Sept. 8. The Great Danes held RMU to 10 points and 208 yards of total offense in what was the Northeast Conference opener for both sides. Robert Morris quarterback Matt Layman went 12-for-25 passing for 121 yards against the defending NEC champion Danes and had to withstand pressure almost all afternoon. Defensive lineman Michael Smith sacked Layman for a 13-yard loss, the largest of the day, on a 3rd-and-7 play during the Colonials' first possession of the fourth quarter. Cornerback Randall Exantus, who finished with four tackles and a pass break-up, joined in on the sack attack as well as he dropped Layman for an 11-yard loss late in the first half.

BIG OFFENSE
The Great Danes' top-ranked offense in the NEC has scored 24 or more points in 16 of the last 18 games, owning a 13-5 record in that span. UAlbany's 24 points was also the most points put up against No. 5 Youngstown State this season, who only allowed 17 points to Pitt and shut out Valparaiso.

SPREADING SUCCESS
The Great Danes have won 10 of their last 13 games and 10 of their last 12 regular season contests.

40-FOR-40
Forty was not only the number of points that Albany scored in its Week 1 win over Colgate, but it is also the number of seasons head coach Bob Ford has been at the helm.  Ford, who has long been deemed "The Architect of Albany Football," was appointed the head coach when Albany reinstated its football program in 1970 following a 46-year absence.

DOUBLE TROUBLE IN THE BACK
For the first time since 2006, two tailbacks recorded over 100-yards rushing in the same game. Against Colgate in Week 1, Drew Smith (174) and Omar Osbourne (113) combined for 287 of UAlbany's 315 rushing yards that game. The last time two players logged over 100-yards apiece was when Marcus Allen (149) and Omar Johnson (135) led the Great Danes to a 24-13 win over Sacred Heart on the road, Oct. 14, 2006.

NEC No. 1
With six first-place votes, UAlbany was chosen to repeat as Northeast Conference Champions, as announced by the NEC office during the 2012 Preseason Teleconference on Thursday, August 2. The Great Danes, who made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA FCS Playoffs last season, earned their first preseason number one ranking since 2009. In addition to the preseason team rankings, UAlbany placed six players on the All-NEC Preseason Team, led by wide receiver Ryan Kirchner and punter Paul Layton.

BUILT FORD TOUGH
UAlbany's Bob Ford is first among active NCAA Division I FCS coaches with 257 career victories. He is also fourth on the all-time FCS chart. Ford, the architect of the UAlbany program, has a 248-158 career record in his 40th season. Under his direction, the Great Danes have moved from the club level in 1970 to its present NCAA Division I FCS status. Ford, who has a 257-179-1 career record at the collegiate level, earned his 200th UAlbany win in a 20-17 victory against Robert Morris in 2005. More than 100 of Bob Ford's assistant coaches are currently working in the professional, college and high school ranks. Dave Campo, a former UAlbany graduate assistant in 1973, is the defensive backs coach of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Dave Clawson (Bowling Green), Pete Lembo (Ball State) and Kevin Morris (Massachusetts) are in the Mid-American Conference. Ford assistants who are Division I FCS head coaches include Al Bagnoli (Penn), Kevin Callahan (Monmouth), Walt Hameline (Wagner) and Chuck Priore (Stony Brook).

NORTHEAST CONFERENCE
UAlbany became an associate member of the Northeast Conference in 1999. The NEC's current football playing membership includes Bryant, Central Connecticut State, Duquesne, Monmouth, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis, Pa., and Wagner. Football has been sponsored by the NEC as a conference sport since 1996.

NEC CONSISTENT
The Great Danes have won four or more conference games in all 13 seasons as a Northeast Conference member.

SMITH RUSHES UP THE LADDER
UAlbany's Drew Smith has worked his way into the top-10 on the school's career rushing chart. Smith, a senior, is the ninth UAlbany player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a career. With his 174 yards vs. Colgate, 57 yards at Robert Morris, and 47 yards at YSU he currently ranks sixth (2,473 yards). Smith needs just 139 more yards to move into fifth, and tie with Brian Manigault (1998-2001). In addition, Smith is climbing the all-purpose yards ladder. Totaling 377 all-purpose yards through the first three games, Smith ranks second all-time with 3,818 all-purpose yards in his career. He is 1,158 yards away from David McCarty's record (4,976).

GOING ON 20 100+
UAlbany tailback Drew Smith accounted for 100-plus all-purpose yards for 20th time in his career against Robert Morris, totaling 119. In Week 1 vs. Colgate, he also surpassed the 100 mark, finishing with 195.

SHUT DOWN
UAlbany's defense has recorded 11 shutouts as a Division I FCS program with the last being a 24-0 victory against Wagner on Oct. 29, 2011. UAlbany held the Seahawks to 204 total yards, including 25 passing. The Great Danes have blanked six NEC opponents at the FCS level.

Instead of having three or four captains this season, the Great Danes will have a captain represent every position. Each was voted captain by those players at his position and will be responsible for his position group and for communicating with the coaching staff regarding any concerns among the team. Youngstown State's attendance of 15,840 last Saturday was the sixth largest crowd the UAlbany football team has ever played in front. The largest was a crowd of 23,097 at Montana on Sept. 22, 2007. A crowd of 18,118 watched UAlbany play Georgia Southern in the 2009 season opener, the fifth largest in program archives. UAlbany appeared before 22,196 against Delaware the previous year. UAlbany played before the largest crowd in its football history against second-ranked Montana in 2007. More than 23,000 were in attendance.

HALL OF FAME WEEKEND
Three former players, a former coach and the 1993-94 men's basketball team will be inducted into the University at Albany Hall of Fame on Friday, September 28 at the 29th Annual HOF Dinner and Induction Ceremony. The induction ceremony will take place on Hall of Fame Weekend, which also includes field hockey hosting Boston University at 3 p.m. On Saturday, football hosts Monmouth at 1 p.m. and following that the men's soccer team will be hosting Stony Brook at 5 p.m. Finally on Sunday, field hockey will host Louisville at 1 p.m. and volleyball will be on the road playing Stony Brook at 1 p.m. The new inductees and their sports: Amy Di Micco '01, field hockey & lacrosse; Andee Lindren '04, softball; Ted Hotaling '95, basketball; and head coach Joe DeMeo '95, wrestling. With this year's class, there are 136 former athletes, coaches and administrators and one team who have been inducted into the University at Albany's Athletic Hall of Fame

COACH TO CURE MD
For the fifth year in a row, college football coaches nationwide will join together in support of the Coach To Cure MD program, which will be held during games of Saturday, September 29, 2012. The rapidly growing annual effort has raised more than a million dollars to battle Duchenne (doo-shin) muscular dystrophy. On Sept. 29, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) members will wear a Coach To Cure MD logo patch on the sidelines and college football fans will be asked to donate to research projects supported by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD). Football fans can donate to Duchenne muscular research by either going online to www.CoachtoCureMD.org or by texting the word CURE to 90999 (a $5 donation will automatically be added to your next phone bill). Last year, more than 10,000 college coaches at 505 different institutions participated in Coach To Cure MD events. The four-year fundraising total is just over $1 million.
