Albany, N.Y.
- Drew Smith, the top tailback on the depth chart, had a 57 yard touchdown
reception off a screen pass to lead the UAlbany offense in the Great Danes'
first intrasquad scrimmage of the spring on Saturday morning at University
Field. On the defensive side of the ball, Randall Exantus led all players with
four tackles, while John Cunningham came away with an interception.
Buddy Leathly led the quarterback
corps with 122 yards on 11 completed passes. The sophomore also picked up nine
yards rushing on two attempts. Redshirt freshman Will Fiacchi went 7-of-12 for
60 yards passing, while also running for five yards on one attempt. Also on
offense, tailback Omar Osbourne, who made an immediate impact with the Great
Danes last fall, made four receptions for 38 yards, including a 26-yard
touchdown catch. Fellow tailback Karl Allison rushed twice for 31 yards.
Wide receiver Ryan Kirchner picked
up where he left off in the fall, making five catches for 93 total yards.
Kirchner's longest catch of the day was a 33-yard pickup. Nick Hutcherson made
two receptions for 11 yards, while Kevin Chillis picked up eight yards on one
catch, and rushed for a five-yard pickup on his only attempt of the day. A
newcomer to the UAlbany receiving corps, freshman Devon Maio added 36 yards on
two catches.
On defense, inside linebacker
Christian Dorsey made three tackles. Six players recorded two tackles each,
while 12 defenders recorded one tackle on the day. The special teams were led
by punter Paul Layton, who had a long punt of 49 yards. Layton, who was a
Northeast Conference First Team honoree in the fall, kicked three times for 117
total yards. He also made two 37-yard field goals.
"I thought we were on the ball a
little bit better than I expected to be," said UAlbany head coach Bob Ford, who
will be entering his 40th varsity season in the fall. "Drew Smith
broke out for a big run and I think Omar Osbourne continues to get your
attention. We did some very positive things on offense, and overall on defense.
The most important thing is to come out healthy, which we did. Overall, it was
an excellent first scrimmage."
UAlbany will hold its second
intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, April 21, in preparation for the 2012 Spring
Game on April 28.
